The 10% cut in school funding in CA has really thrown the school for a loop, and we've spent the last couple of months figuring out how to respond in a way that is positive for both families and staff. It's been very difficult, but it has also helped spur us on to re-look at some of our practices and hopefully make some positive changes. I'll write more about the actual changes once they get finalized - everything is still in the discussion phase, although we are beginning to make some real headway.
Note to bay area math teachers (or those wanting to relocate to the 408): we are hiring! Check out the website or email me if you want more info.
Thinking Thursday: Explain a Math Trick

Dan, is your school facing a cut of 10%? That's huge! I'll be very curious to see how you make cuts....
Our Boston charter school gets $ pegged to the district spending. BPS will spend 4% more next year, so that's what we'll get.
However, BPS wants to spend 7% more, so they call the "just 4%" increase a "$30 million cut." Explain that math to your kids....
Yep, 10 percent... That's where a lot of our mental energy has been going lately - trying to figure out how to not only keep our program intact, but continue to improve things for staff and students.
An increase in funding? Hmm.. that would be nice. We don't know how long this cut will last, so we're building it into our permanent model. Hopefully things will change in the future, but for now we cope.
